MSU-Vanderbilt Post-Game Wrap Up: Bost leads Bulldogs To Thrilling Comeback

January 22, 2012

News, Sports

Instant Analysis: The Mississippi State Bulldogs came into their matchup against the red-hot Vanderbilt Commodores looking to rebound from a loss to in-state rival Ole Miss. The Bulldogs were able to accomplish that, beating the Commodores in a thrilling overtime comeback 78-77. The Bulldogs were led to victory by Dee Bost, who scored 24 points. The Bulldogs improve to 16-4 and 3-2 in SEC play.

Key Stats

MSU’s 50% 3 Point Percentage: The Bulldogs are shooting under 35 percent from three on the season, but they shot the lights out tonight.

MSU’s 10 Steals: The Bulldogs did a good job of forcing turnovers by disrupting passing lanes.

Vandy’s 51.9% 3 Point Percentage: The Commodores are a great three-point shooting team, and they proved it tonight — hitting over 50 percent of their threes.

What I Liked

Steele’s Three Point Shooting: I’ve been critical of Steele, but the kid was huge in the second half. He connected on 5 of 8 three-point shots.

Competitive Game: I hate to admit it, but I’m a sucker for a good game. Tight matchups show which players and teams want to win a game.

 What I Didn’t Like

Clutch Free Throw Shooting: Bost and Moultrie need to make their free throws late in the game. The game might not go in the Bulldogs’ favor next time.

Players To Watch

Vanderbilt

John Jenkins: Jenkins scored 21 points and was 5 of 11 from three point range.

Mississippi State

Renardo Sidney: Sidney sat out most of the first half in foul trouble. He sparked a Bulldog 14-0 run, and yes, you read that correctly. He hit a big three in overtime and made a key pass.

Three Keys To Victory

Vandy

1. Double The Post: Vanderbilt doubled the post when Moultrie got the ball and were effective at times doing it.

2. Leave Bost Open: They didn’t leave him open, but he still played well tonight.

3. Attack Sidney: They went at Sidney and were effective at exposing Sid’s weakness. He really needs to raise his effort level, and this is coming from a Sidney supporter.

Mississippi State

1. Feed The Post When Ezeli Out: They were able to feed the post when Sidney was matched up with Ezeli.

2. Get Deville 20+ Minutes: Smith didn’t make the trip because of dizziness.

3. Keep Hood Involved: Hood got involved, but he was cold shooting tonight.

Final Analysis: The Bulldogs will now prepare to play SEC Western Division foe the LSU Tigers Wednesday. The game will tip-off at 7 pm in Humphrey Coliseum.

The Real Story Player Of The Game

Dee Bost

Dee Bost

Dee Bost: I’ve been harder on Dee than Skip Bayless is on LeBron James, but he balled out tonight. I’m giving him the player of the game, because he deserves it. Hopefully the senior guard continues playing smart basketball like he did tonight.

Special kudos to Arnett Moultrie, Jalen Steele, and Renardo Sidney
