NBA Christmas Day Preview

December 25, 2011

News, Sports

Initial Outlook: The NBA is finally back after a nearly five month-long NBA Lockout. The NBA season will start with a bang — the season will open with five games. Top players like LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul will be on display. I will give a short preview of every game and my picks. Cyrus McGowan also gave his picks for the games.

Boston Celtics at New York Knicks

Time: 11 am Central

Stars In Game: Amare Stoudemire (Knicks), Carmelo Anthony (Knicks), Kevin Garnett (Celtics)

Short Preview: The Knicks and Celtics come into the opening game of the NBA season, looking to start off their season on a positive note. The Knicks added Tyson Chandler to the frontcourt, and many feel it will make them contenders. The Celtics and their Big Three: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce are trying to prove that they are still contenders to be reckoned with.

I’m going with the Celtics. They should beat a Knicks team that is still learning how to play together.

My Pick: Celtics

McGowan’s Pick: Knicks

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks

Time: 1:30 pm Central

Stars In Game: LeBron James (Heat), Dwayne Wade (Heat), Chris Bosh (Heat), Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas)

Short Preview: The second game of the Christmas Day slate will be a rematch of last years’ NBA championship. The Heat has taken a more relaxed approach than last season, but they have taken a title-or-bust mentality. The Mavericks lost their enforcer Tyson Chandler to the Knicks; they added 6th man of the year Lamar Odom and Vince Carter. The Heat will look to exact a measure of revenge against the defending NBA champs.

I expect the “Heatles” to take care of business.

My Pick: Heat

McGowan’s Pick: Heat

Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers

Time: 4 pm Central

Stars In Game: Derrick Rose (Bulls), Kobe Bryant (Lakers)

Short Preview: The Bulls and the Lakers are teams headed in opposite directions. The Bulls are a young contending team — while the Lakers are an aging one. The game’s set up promises to be an epic matchup between the old and new guards of the NBA.

I’m going with the “Lake Show”. Kobe always shows up in big games — I don’t expect this one to be any different.

My Pick: Lakers

McGowan’s Pick: Bulls

Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder

Time: 7 pm Central

Stars In Game: Kevin Durant (Thunder), Russell Westbrook (Thunder), Dwight Howard (Magic)

Short Preview: The fourth game of the Christmas Day slate is similar to the third one. The Thunder are young and hungry contenders for the NBA Title — the Magic, in retrospect, are waiting for their best player — Dwight Howard — to be traded. The game should showcase an explosive collision between superstars Durant and Howard.

Kevin Durant will lead the Thunder to a convincing victory.

My Pick: Thunder

McGowan’s Pick: Thunder

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors

Time: 9:30 pm Central

Stars In Game: Chris Paul (Clippers), Blake Griffin (Clippers), Monta Ellis (Warriors)

Short Preview: The last game of Christmas Day was originally just another game, but then the Clippers acquired Chris Paul from the Hornets. The Clippers are now considered legitimate contenders for the NBA title. The game will give the viewing public the first chance to see how good the revamped Clippers can be.

“Lob City” should be in full effect. It will be a high scoring affair, but the Clippers will run away with the game.

My Pick: Clippers

McGowan’s Pick: Clippers

Final Outlook: The NBA opening day could be the most exciting in recent history. Everyone will get their first look at contenders and pretenders; so, I advise everyone to sit back and enjoy the games.

Merry Christmas

Upcoming: 2011-2012 NBA Breakout Players
